Executive Director of Peterson Life with Cancer, Arts & Healing, and Patient Experience

Jennifer Bires, MSW, LCSW, OSW-C is a nationally recognized leader in psychosocial oncology with over 15 years of experience developing compassionate, patient-centered supportive care programs for individuals impacted by cancer and their families.

As Executive Director of Integrative and Psychosocial Oncology at Inova Schar Cancer including the Peterson Life with Cancer program, she leads a multidisciplinary team of oncology behavioral health therapists, social workers, nurse navigators, and oncology dietitians. Under her leadership, the institute delivers comprehensive, no-cost psychosocial care and education that addresses the emotional, psychological, and practical challenges of cancer across the care continuum.

Jennifer also oversees Inova’s Arts and Healing Program, advancing the use of creative expression as a powerful therapeutic tool. Her clinical expertise spans key areas such as the integration of technology in mental health, sexual health and intimacy, adolescent and young adult cancer survivorship, and end-of-life care.

Currently pursuing her PhD in Palliative Care at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Jennifer’s research explores the use of psychedelic-assisted-therapy as an innovative behavioral health intervention for people impacted by cancer. Her academic work reflects a deep commitment to expanding access to evidence-based, holistic care models.

She earned her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and her bachelor’s degree from Clemson University. A respected voice in the field, Jennifer serves on multiple national boards, including the Association of Oncology Nurse Navigators+, the Association of Cancer Care Centers, and the American Cancer Society’s National Navigation Roundtable. She is a past Chair of the Board of Oncology Social Work.
