
Melissa F. Miller, PhD, MPH, currently serves as Research Director for Life with Cancer at Inova Schar Cancer Institute where she leads a dedicated research program focused on advancing supportive and integrative cancer care from diagnosis through the balance of life. Dr. Miller is deeply committed to leading research that not only informs practice but also delivers tangible, patient-centered outcomes. Previously, as Senior Director of Research at the Cancer Support Community, an advocacy institution, she directed the scientific strategy and served as PI of the Cancer Experience Registry, a longitudinal research study for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers designed to understand the emotional, physical, practical, and financial impact of cancer. Dr. Miller’s work has been instrumental in the creation of innovative resources including evidence-based programs for cancer survivors and the development and psychometric validation of numerous cancer experience measures for patients and caregivers, including CancerSupportSource. Dr. Miller has numerous publications and conference presentations on patient and caregiver experience, including emotional distress, nutritional support, barriers to accessing mental health care, health-related quality of life, financial toxicity, and treatment decision making.
Dr. Miller holds a doctoral degree in International Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and M.P.H. in Quantitative Methods from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She received post-doctoral training in the Cancer Prevention Fellow Program and Office of Cancer Survivorship at the National Cancer Institute.
